Earthquake Memorial Installation
Interactive Kinect installation in museum
Interactive tech studio Craftech360 commissioned generative artist Dancing Pixels and myself to create software for an immersive installation for a Memorial museum in Bhuj, India.
The installation consisted of six interactive areas in an oval/cylinder shaped room where the visuals were projected onto the wall in a seamless manner.
The visitors could go up to the marked areas for interaction, see themselves in an abstract pointcloud representation and perform a “namaste” hand gesture that would trigger interactive sound and visually a sense of energy gathering. After a few seconds of holding this gesture their pointcloud would float towards the ceiling where they join into a collective nebula of particles.
In their place now letters float as particles which form into 12 random names of victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake.
My tasks:
- General TouchDesigner project structure:
- Communication with Watchout media server
- Multiple language support
- Kinect data processing / cleanup
- Gesture recognition and interaction logic
- Providing the client a configurable project file to control certain aspects of the installation as well as perform sensor calibration
- Display randomized name list of victims
- Interactive audio using Max MSP
